After a very successful event last year, expectations are high for the second annual Woolooga Commercial Brahman Female Show and Sale to be held on Friday, June 5, from 9.30am at the Woolooga Saleyards.
With more than $13,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs this year, breeders of quality Brahman females will be out in force.
Sale organiser, Sandy McCartney, said the 2026 sale would attract bigger numbers after an “extraordinary” sale in 2025.
“After the great success of last year’s sale we are hoping for 500-600 head this year, with good interest already shown,” he said.
“I believe everything was $700 above market rate last year, and we are hoping with this prizemoney we will attract the good operators.
“You tell me what other show/sale has that much cash around.”
Mr McCartney said, however, they were chasing quality rather than quantity.
“We are catering the sale to Brahman females of good quality, quiet temperament and handling for the south east region of Queensland and north east NSW,” he said.
“The country is a picture, and cattle prices are good, so all bodes well for a great sale.
“So far we have cattle coming from north of Rocky, Eidsvold, Mundubbera, Gayndah, and from Marlborough south on the coastal strip.”
With four classes including: weaner heifers, joined heifers, PTIC heifers and PTIC cows, the numbers will be capped this year to no more than 600 head, according to Mr McCartney.
“We have a cash prize of $6000 on offer for the Grand Champion pen of females, and $3000 for the Reserve Champion pen, as well as $1000 cash to winners of each class,” he said.
Being conducted by agents, Sullivan Livestock and Rural Services, the event has again attracted some great sponsorship.
“We have two new major sponsors in Lallemand Animal Nutrition Australia (sponsoring Grand Champion) and Fodderlink, owned by Cameron and Rachel Angel (sponsoring Res Champion), as well as PBA Feeds, who have come on board this year to sponsor a class,” Mr McCartney said.
They join Virbac, Hazelton Brahmans, and Bucca Station, in sponsoring the other three classes.
“We also have Nutrien Ag Solutions Bundaberg and Sullivan Livestock, as sponsors of trophies and ribbons, and the owners of the Grand Champion Pen will also win a bronze trophy, being custom made by Jaye Hall.”
The ABBA sponsored sale is earlier than last year, being held a day before the Gympie Brahman Female sale which this year is on June 6.
“I hope it becomes a mini Brahman week for females, with the two female sales, for commercial and stud, held over consecutive days,” Mr McCartney said.
Last year’s show and sale saw Mr McCartney and wife, Jamie, of Bucca Station Partnership win the Grand Champion pen, with their first placed PTIC heifers under three years. They sold five pens of ten PTIC heifers to top the sale at $2800 per head.
Overall, 325 Brahman females sold on the day for an average of $1722.51/head, grossing $577,040.
Agent, Dan Sullivan, said demand for quality Brahman females was high at last year’s sale.
It is hoped that will be repeated come Friday, 5 June.
All cattle must be: purebred Brahmans of straight red and grey colour; in half-deck lots and effectively dehorned or polled; pre-inspected and pre-treated before the sale; and PTIC females will be preg-tested by a vet.
