An impressive draft of high-grade cattle is assured at the inaugural Woolooga Commercial Brahman Female show and sale being held at the Woolooga Saleyards on Thursday, July 10.
A yarding of around 500 quality Brahman females is anticipated according to Sullivan Livestock and Rural Services principal, Dan Sullivan.
Mr Sullivan said he expected strong support for the first sale of its type ever to be held.
“We’ve had some good inquiry at this stage, including some preg-tested females and good runs of unjoined females from respectable herds,” he said.
“We want to provide a Brahman female that European bulls can be put over, which is a big calling for our area, so we’d like to stand up with some pretty good females, quality-wise and temperament-wise.”
The ABBA-sponsored show and sale will feature four classes including: PTIC Heifers under 3 years; PTIC cow under 6 years; Yearling Heifers over 300kg; and Weaner Heifers under 300kg.
Sponsors include: Virbac, who are sponsoring the Grand Champion Pen; Nutrien Ag Solutions Bundaberg; Sullivan Livestock; Hazelton Brahmans; and Cooloola Custom Stockfeed.
Mr Sullivan said it would be a matter of quality over quantity at the sale, with strict conditions adhered to.
He said there would be only purebred Brahmans of good quality accepted, of straight red and grey colour.
Other sale conditions include:
All entries must be in half -deck lots and effectively dehorned or polled.
All females must be sold at auction, and pregnancy or calf may be by a bull of another breed.
All cattle must be pregnancy tested by a vet, and will be pre inspected 2-3 weeks prior to the sale where photographs and videos will be taken for marketing purposes.
“We want to promote the use of the Brahman female in cross-breeding programs to produce an article that is very saleable,” Mr Sullivan said.
“The season is quite good, and quality breeders always meet respectable competition, and that’s what we are aiming for,” he said.
“We are hopeful to make it a regular event every year.”
