Attending the ICMJ Northern Conference in Rockhampton a few weeks ago was an unforgettable experience that offered a deep dive into the Australian beef industry.

The program was packed with hands-on workshops, insightful presentations, and a meat judging competition that provided practical exposure to the beef supply chain.
A highlight of the event was the unique “Hump Day” barbecue, where the Smokin’ Yak team, led by ABBA senior vice president Matthew Noakes, served up mouth-watering Brahman humps slow-cooked to perfection. This culinary experience not only showcased the quality of Brahman beef but also added a flavorful twist to the conference.

Networking was another standout aspect of the conference. Engaging with industry leaders, fellow students, and young professionals opened doors to new opportunities and collaborations.
The support from ABBA was instrumental throughout the event. Their active involvement, from organizing engaging activities to providing valuable resources, enriched the overall experience and underscored their commitment to nurturing the next generation in the beef industry. The conference not only enhanced my knowledge but also inspired a deeper appreciation for the Brahman breed and its significant role in Australia’s beef sector.

I’d like to thank the Australian Brahman Breeders Association for giving myself and other attendees the opportunity to participate in the ICMJ Northern Conference.

It was an engaging experience that gave us an insight into the northern beef supply chain. There were many valuable workshops and presentations, one I particularly enjoyed was Paul Williams from ABBA, speaking about EBVs.
Another interesting session was the young professionals panel which had some great guest speakers.

Networking was a highlight, in particular at the meet and greet dinner where we were able to try some of ABBA vice president Matthew Noakes delicious slow cooked Brahman hump!
All in all it was a great week to meet like minded people across our industry.

Last month, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Northern ICMJ Meat Judging Competition, which provided a truly hands-on introduction to the meat industry. From evaluating carcasses to understanding grading standards, it was an eye-opening experience that deepened my appreciation for the practical side of meat production.
A huge thank you to the Australian Brahman Breeders Association for organising the trip and giving us this valuable opportunity. Also, a special thanks to Mathew Noakes for preparing the delicious slow-cooked Brahman hump—an absolute highlight!

Another standout moment was our visit to Teys Rockhampton, where we gained first-hand insight into the processing side of the supply chain. Seeing the full journey from paddock to plate brought the entire industry into perspective.
Grateful for the experience and for everyone who made it possible.
